December 2012 and the End of the Mayan Calendar

The Astrology of December 2012

December 2012 and the End of the Mayan Calendar

Wrestling with the Real World

This analysis is based on a triple composite chart cast for the following three dates: the New Moon of December 13; the End of the Mayan Calendar & Winter Solstice (11:11 am and 11:12 am respectively) on December 21; and the Full Moon of December 28. All dates and times are UT.

A great deal of speculation surrounds the date marking the end of the Mayan calendar. Frankly, I cannot speak to all that. However, I can say that the chart for that date is quite remarkable. For this analysis, I have included that date in a triple composite in order to link it with the flow of events I have been tracking, to make it part of a trajectory. Technically, adding that date to the usual New and Full Moon composite makes a small but significant difference.  It moves the Ascendant from Capricorn to Aquarius.

The December 2012 chart encompasses all the themes that have dominated recent charts: deep personal transformation; the liberation and empowerment of women and the ascendancy of the feminine principle generally; the subtilization and spiritualization of intimate relationships (the end of “relationships as usual”); nurturance issues, i.e., providing the basic requirements of life for all members of society. This chart turns these themes into a single theme: thorough social, economic and political reform actively linked to deep personal transformation.

More, all the disparate, disjointed transformational processes described in recent charts going back several years combine into one, integral process. More specifically, this chart blends the process of personal transformation with the process of social transformation.

Leo vs. Aquarius

All the aspects are centered in the left, or personal half of the chart. It looks a bit like a cat’s cradle. This matrix of aspects filters everything that passes between the world and the individual, and vice versa, drawing it all into a transformative process.

Aquarius is on the Ascendant. Aquarius represents those idealistic, humanitarian abstractions most often associated with our higher selves, or our “better angels.” Leo is  on the Descendant. In practice, it represents those things in our lives to which the ego tends to be most strongly attached. Leo, like all the Sun signs, is capable of transcending the ego. But given the way the world works, most of the influences entering through the Leo Descendant will probably be ego-based. Hence, as a practical matter, this chart describes a tension between the ego and the higher self.

The aspects occupy the half of the chart nearest the Ascendant, Aquarius, and, in effect, form a force field around the individual, bending all incoming and outgoing energies in an Aquarian direction. The individual will want to take everything and everyone, including themselves, in an Aquarian direction. In essence, this structure actively and strenuously supports consciousness raising and dialogue aimed at upliftment.

Clearly, the details of the process will vary from individual to individual and from circumstance to circumstance.

Making Ends Meet for the 99%

The transformative matrix and the strong Aquarian/Leo polarity are the chart’s defining characteristics. There are no exact aspects between the major planets, for example, or any other unusual events to speak of, around which ideas or events can crystallize.

One feature of the matrix stands out: the opening of the matrix, it’s widest point, is occupied by a Yod. The Yod is named after the Hebrew letter, Yod, often described as “the finger of God.” It points the way.

The Yod is formed by Pluto in Capricorn, Saturn in Scorpio and Jupiter retrograde in Gemini. Pluto is in Capricorn on the cusp of the 11th & 12th; Saturn is in Scorpio in the 9th. Saturn and Pluto are in mutual reception and in favorable, sextile relationship. Saturn and Jupiter form the base of the Yod. Retrograde Jupiter in Gemini in the 4th near the Imum Coeli, occupies the apex of the Yod, destabilizing the energy and, thus, stimulating and directing debate. Jupiter’s retrograde motion will only amplify the tendency of the Yod to deepen and complicate discussion.

Typically, Yods do not yield quick or easy resolution. Rather, they tend to prolong discussions, drawing participants into ever more subtle or obscure issues. Given the difficulty and the importance of the issues currently under discussion by the world’s leaders, this has to be seen as a good thing.

Anyone who thinks that current issues can, or will, be bent into the old, vexing polarities, into the counter-productive, conflict prone patterns of recent times, is seriously deluding themselves.

This Yod effectively links the consciousness of the wealthy and powerful to the consciousness of the grassroots, the consciousness of the 1% and the 99%, in a single dynamic structure supporting an ever deepening dialogue. It drives changes in attitude at both the governmental and the grassroots levels, at once and in tandem.

Beyond discussion and dialogue, the Yod will tend to generate an endless series of events in the real world that illustrate the meaning of the Yod and the importance of the issues it raises in our lives. The Yod turns the world into a learning environment and puts us all on a learning curve.

A Global Makeover

All the planets in the Yod, Pluto, Saturn and Jupiter, are part of extended stelliums.

Pluto and Saturn are part of a group of planets that include Juno, Sun, Mercury Venus, the North Node at the base of the Yod. They are in the 9th thru the 11th houses, from Scorpio to Capricorn, at the top of the chart. Both signs and houses govern things like power, administrative authority, governing philosophy and social responsibility.

The stellium at the top of the chart indicates that just about every facet of the rules that govern our lives, individually and collectively, will be re-negotiated.

  • Pluto’s involvement will affect all power and control issues.
  • Juno’s involvement will affect the structure of church- and state-sanctioned marriage and other kinds of lifelong bonds.
  • The Sun’s involvement will affect higher, conscious, voluntary aspects of our identity, including, for example, the principles that govern conscience and the sense of beauty.
  • Mercury’s involvement will affect all forms of communication, including and especially language - what and how things can be communicated.
  • Venus’s involvement will affect love and the affections generally as well as more intimate aspects of our lives.
  • The North Node’s involvement will lend a sense of direction and of mission.
  • Saturn’s involvement will lend a realistic understanding of the limits we work against. It will add a sense of seriousness and urgency. And it will make the outcome of this process durable.

Structurally, the stellium at the apex of the Yod (but at the bottom of the chart) focuses the deliberations of the powerful on the well-being of the grassroots, the 99%.

In countries across the globe, the most thoughtful, powerful and authoritative people in society will be immersed in an effort to rethink the rules by which they govern.

The South Node, Jupiter, Lilith, Vesta and Ceres are in Taurus, Gemini and Cancer in the 3rd, 4th and fifth houses, respectively. These houses and signs govern grassroots politics, economics, family and everyday social life. There is also a very strong but not exclusive emphasis on the feminine.

  • The South Node requires that we bring fresh insights about conditions at the grassroots to bear. In this position, the South Node also requires a collective, governmental approach to challenges. Efforts to shift burdens to the local level, for example, will backfire quickly and badly.
  • Retrograde Jupiter tells us that the creation of new wealth for the whole of society will depend on improving economic growth and general well-being at the grassroots level. Jupiter’s retrograde motion will drive the discussion into even deeper and more subtle areas than would otherwise be the case with a Yod.
  • Lilith’s involvement tells us that any solution will require the empowerment of women and the strengthening of the feminine principle generally.
  • Vesta’s involvement tells us to expect dedication, even militant commitment to principles and ideals.
  • Ceres’ involvement tells us that nurturance issues, issues surrounding birth, death, nourishment, cultivation and social welfare generally, the overall quality of life at the grassroots, from birth to death, pervade high level discussions.

The Feminine Empowered

In recent charts, the feminine principle has been foregrounded. The same is true in this chart. The importance of the feminine principle is strongly emphasized in the Yod that, itself, strongly influences the meaning of the entire chart. Among other things, Lilith, Vesta and Ceres, for example, placements just discussed, are all strongly and closely associated with the feminine, so are Cancer and the fourth house.

Revelation and Revolution

A group of planets in the leftmost, personal half of the chart drives intense psychological and personal transformation with a decidedly radical, revolutionary flavor.

These planetary placements are all strong, but they are also complex and paradoxical, impossible for the ego to process without going beyond existing mental, emotional and behavioral boundaries.

Transformation of Gender Definitions

  • Mars is in Capricorn in the 12th house. It is strongly placed by sign, exalted in Capricorn and reinforced by Pluto in Capricorn on the cusp of the 12th. It is in the house of Neptune. Mars is also in mutual reception with Neptune by house. This is a volatile house placement, not ideal for Mars. Nor is it particularly comfortable for Neptune.
The Mars energy is powerfully amplified but asked to express in a refined and spiritual (Neptunian) way that will not come easy, especially for men and boys. While the feminine principle is being foregrounded in the Yod, the masculine principle is undergoing refinement and spiritualization. Both genders, in fact the entire spectrum of gender identities, each in its own way, is being challenged to move beyond the boundaries that presently define it.

  • Neptune and Chiron are strongly placed in the 1st, suggesting an expansion and a spiritualization of the sense of self, a transcendence of the ego, and a lessening of materialistic motives. Chiron's influence can bring physical illness or injury to the extent that these are needed to destroy obstacles to personal growth.

Retail Revolution

  • Pallas is also in Pisces in the 2nd. This points to a transformation of our spending patterns, making them more socially conscious, more consistent with our evolving, more idealistic, Aquarian goals.
  • The Moon conjoins Uranus in Aries the 2nd house. This contact is exact to within 17’ of arc, (extremely close) in the 2nd house. The personality is suffused with revolutionary, Uranian energy leading to a desire for economic reform and the use of grassroots economics to bring reform.
We should interpret this placement very broadly to mean that, at very least, people will now expect to be treated with greater consideration and respect in the world of retail sales and services. They will increasingly expect their aspirations and their rights to be respected by those with whom they do business.

Fortune Favors Those Who Change

The Part of Fortune is in Virgo, near the cusp of the 8th house.

This placement of the Part of Fortune indicates strong, substantive support for those coping with intense inner and outer changes, especially changes affecting nurturance, lifestyle and quality of life issues.

The Big Picture

The entire panorama described above plays out in the tension between Aquarius and Leo, between concern for the group and concern for the individual. The tendency will be to move things in an Aquarian direction, to place the individual's thoughts and intentions in a wider, collective, universal context. But it also plays out within a new, dynamic, long-term arrangement of the powerful outermost planets.

In October, Saturn entered Scorpio putting the finishing touches on a new, more stable, supportive and lasting arrangement of the outer planets. (See the final paragraphs of October’s post.) The Yod that drives our December chart taps directly into the power of this new arrangement. In fact, the entire matrix of aspects just discussed is solidly embedded in this new planetary arrangement.

Saturn and Pluto, the two planets with the most concrete, immediate and unavoidable effects on our lives are most directly involved in December’s Yod. But the other two planets in this new arrangement, Uranus and Neptune, also play an important role in December.

Basically, December’s chart harnesses the power of this new planetary formation in the service of a veritable epidemic of personal transformation and general reform. It also combines these two processes, individual transformation and societal transformation, into a single holistic process.

The Winter solstice chart always affects the month’s immediately following it. But I believe this chart sets the agenda and the tone for decades to come.

It embraces all of the important themes and trends of our times in a single holistic, transformational process. It also embraces the individual and the group in that same holistic, transformational process. The current planetary arrangement is, in astrological terms, monumental and its effects are not likely to be transitory. It is not in any sense a passing phenomenon.

The chart for December 2012 and The End of the Mayan Calendar marks an important threshold: the world shifted from one in which vitally important trends were moving on different, often conflicting tracks and the powerful among us were at odds with each other and with those they governed, to a world in which the trends interact harmoniously and everyone, government and the governed, 1% and 99%, work together, if not always amicably, toward a single end.

Hence, the chart for December 2012 seems to me to describe a watershed moment. As a strictly practical matter, the planetary forces set in motion in this chart will take a generation or two, or three, to fully play out.

The December 2012 chart promises personal transformation and holistic social, economic and political reform. But we must remember, one person’s reform is another person’s unwelcome change; one nation’s revolution is another nation’s security threat; one person’s spiritual transformation is another person’s grounds for divorce.

All change is difficult and the scale and scope of change foretold in this chart will be difficult indeed.  Many among us will not handle it well.

Sign-by-Sign Astrology Forecast for December 2012

Astrology Forecast for December 2012

FOR EVERYONE ~ December 2012 will find most of us in the midst of complicated, occasionally frantic and crucially important changes in our lives. Many will come up against at least one seemingly impenetrable obstacle - a total deal-breaker. But in each case, a discussion, an encounter, a realization, or just some experience, will unlock a new potential in ourselves or bring a breakthrough in negotiations that allows us to proceed, confidently and with renewed enthusiasm. (December’s forecast takes into account the end of the Mayan Calendar.)

♑ CAPRICORN ~ (Dec. 21 - Jan. 18) Some person or persons are absolutely determined to make changes at home. They want more freedom. Period. Major compromises are unavoidable. Notice I didn’t say closure. This is only the beginning. It will take a lengthy and sincere effort to understand the issues, let alone resolve them. You must penetrate one of your own blind spots and/or strengthen a weak spot to make this work. Fortunately for everyone, conditions are far more conducive to a successful outcome than they would have been a little while back.

♒ AQUARIUS ~ (Jan. 19 - Feb. 17) The basics of your life are slowly turning into limitations and, maybe, burdens.  The need to make fairly substantial changes is looming. The ideals, good feelings and high spirits you naturally bring to a situation must be turned into resources and action that, in turn, will lead to needed changes. This is about moving from the realm of ideas and ideals into the realm of real world empowerment. Your efforts to make the necessary changes will lead to the release of unexpected psychological and spiritual resources.

♓ PISCES ~ (Feb. 18 - Mar. 19) A kaleidoscopic vision of possibilities fills your mind, but tough times and stubborn obstacles seem to belie those visions. One of the biggest problems is a set of emotional and motivational blocks in your own mind. As you strive to bring clarity to your plans for the future, you must also work to dissolve these stubborn, partly concealed, inner obstacles to action. The two processes must go hand in hand. Your efforts will unleash a greater power than you realized you had within you.

♈ ARIES ~ (Mar. 20 - Apr. 18) The planets are handing you blueprints for the future that reveal a much more desirable life. It is where you need to end up and it would be best for everyone else in your life, too.  But making it happen will require almost grim determination and consistently firm, decisive action.  It will also require a real dialogue between authority figures, assorted other powers that be, and important family, friends and associates. Your discussions will tap into an unexpectedly rich source of motivational force.

♉ TAURUS ~ (Apr. 19 - May 19) Taurus must blend a mix of abstract ideals, inspiration and material resources into a new lifestyle. Very powerful and quite persistent forces are at work in your heart and mind, reshaping your understanding of yourself, transforming your expectations for the future and ... well ... driving you to create a new lifestyle that gives full expression to a new you. Fortunately, the material resources are either in place or on their way. Old mental habits and the occasional economic reality might delay you, but only temporarily.

♊ GEMINI ~ (May 20 - June 19) December is another month when Gemini’s talent and influence are unceremoniously pressed into service by and for others. Issues are thorny and stakes high. Everyone’s future seems to be on the line. And you do indeed hold an important key. Your guidance and support can have an almost magical effect, unlocking hidden potential, jump starting motivation, breaking stubborn impasses and inspiring cooperation. But this is very demanding work. You’ll need to draw some lines; others must make a contribution. Personal power is returning.

♋ CANCER ~ (June 20 - July 21) One key to success in December is a willingness to share power and resources and convince friends to do so. Then choices will become easier and obstacles will begin to disappear. The process at work here goes beyond logic, into subtle, intuitive realms where Cancerians are at home. Your intuition is very much up to the task. But garnering cooperation is only the beginning. You must also convince those in power to go along. It’s worth the effort. They can contribute a crucial spark.

♌ LEO ~ (July 22 - Aug. 21) There are challenges at home and responsibility rests with you. Broad changes are necessary if you are to sort these things out. But you’ve been wanting to make some lifestyle changes for your own reasons. There’s no textbook solution for this situation. You’ll need to innovate and improvise. Conditions are too fluid for definite timelines. Your situation is not unique or unconnected to the situations others find themselves in. Your solution will be a model for many others, including family, fellow workers and employers.

♍ VIRGO ~ (Aug. 22 - Sept. 21) You could find yourself playing the role of catalyst, instigator or mediator (or all of the above) in a seemingly tense face-off. Those determined to force change are facing those with the power and inclination to preserve the status quo. The desire for change is intense and growing. Alliances are fluid. In-depth discussions with those in power can break an impasse and even forge a seemingly unlikely consensus for change. Don’t prejudge the outcome or the attitudes of others. People are thinking new thoughts.

♎ LIBRA ~ (Sept. 22 - Oct. 21) Libra’s day-to-day life is spent among people struggling with the details of complicated life changes. Home life can be somewhat intense. Finances require constant attention. Your understanding of human motivation is surprisingly keen right now. People need to break personal boundaries and to form more productive and dynamic alliances, including their alliances with you. Your insights can help others achieve this goal. In the process, you can further everyone’s financial interests, your own included. Don’t accept guidance based on clich├ęs, or offer it, either.

♏ SCORPIO ~ (Oct. 22 - Nov. 20) Your daily life is now filled with people making complicated life adjustments. Many who approach you could be more concerned with their own needs than with yours. Don’t feel obliged to get involved. It’s OK to offer advice. Given the planetary lineup, your intuitive grasp of their situation could be better than their own understanding. However, having offered your opinion, it might be wiser to withdraw. Quality alone time is especially important to Scorpio, now, and others need to tend to their affairs.

♐ SAGITTARIUS ~ (Nov. 21 - Dec. 20) You could be experiencing a crisis of confidence. Self-doubt and regret could haunt your quiet moments. With the planets the way they are, this could get channeled into obsessive concern with key partnerships and finances. Your partners and your finances both contribute to peace of mind. However, they can’t get you the whole way there. It’s about personal healing. You need to unlock deep healing potentials within yourself, through prayer, meditation or contemplation. Tapping into your own power for self-healing should be your priority.

The Astrology of November 2012

The Astrology of November 2012
(with a footnote about Super Storm Sandy)

A Test, Really

In some respects, November is a good news/bad news month; in others, it is a Rorschach (ink blot) test. What we think we see will have a lot to do with what we get. And for a great many of us, for those who choose so, November is a portal into a new and better time.

The difficult aspects are in the foreground.  The good aspects are powerful and lasting, but they are in the background. So how we come out of November, the choices we make, will depend a lot on where we put our focus.

The bad news for November is a month-long series of challenging aspects with a respite in the middle of the month. These are, as I said, very much in the foreground.

November opens with a series of astrological events bound to generate immense, all but overwhelming, confusion and frustrating delay.  It closes with a series of potentially explosive aspects. A potential for radical, unexpected change and crisis pervades the month.

With two eclipses in November, the choices we make will be fateful and, realistically, irreversible.

These difficult aspects affect all of our most important relationships, from their spiritual, physical and emotional foundations to their outermost social, economic and political manifestations.

The Test

To escape the worst effects of the obvious bad aspects and benefit from the powerful, but more subtle, supportive aspects, we need to release any negativity built up over the last several years, respond constructively to November’s challenges and embrace the opportunities that are now rapidly emerging.

We’ll need to meet the challenges of November optimistically and focus on the profound, and profoundly positive, potentials now emerging.

In September and October many of us committed ourselves to a new course of action.  November is a test of how clearly we understand the task we have set ourselves and the depth of our resolve to overcome the inner and outer obstacles to our goals.

For a great many of us, the challenge will be a struggle to make deep, difficult changes in important relationships so everyone can move forward, materially, emotionally and spiritually.

At the same time, the planets are laying the foundation for stability, restoration, dramatic reform, innovation and growth in our lives generally.

I’m not saying it will be easy.  The challenges are as real as the opportunities. The planets appear to be creating a very dark moment purposely to see how well we remember the light and how willing we are to embrace it.

Bad News First

Let’s consider the raw astrological energies first. I will place these events in the context of November’s composite chart and discuss the themes they will touch upon, afterwards.

That is often how planetary energies manifest and how we experience them. They appear to us as unspecific, untargeted releases of destructive or constructive energy bursting on the landscape. It is only later that we understand that certain areas of our lives have been affected, for better or for worse.

Mercury Aggravated

1. 11/06 - Mercury is stationary/retrograde.

We can look forward to all the usual Mercury retrograde stuff: communication snafus, stalled transactions, and bureaucratic snarls. Postponements, cancellations and schedule changes will abound. Some familiar services and products will become unavailable. New ones will come online. The day-to-day will be disrupted in a hundred ways, big and small.

On the upside, old business and long-delayed issues will reach closure. And when it’s over, new, improved systems will be online.

But this Mercury retrograde will be seriously aggravated by other astrological events.

For the US, it will also come at the worst possible time. For example, Mercury will turn retrograde at 6:04 pm EST, during the general election in the US. More generally, the affect of this Mercury station will be seriously aggravated by other aspects.

Neptune Piles On

2. 11/11 - Neptune is stationary/direct.

Ideological issues, spiritual issues, questions of personal aspiration are resolved.  People feel better able to move forward, more confident in their beliefs.

However, for a few days before and after its station, Neptunian fogs will compound the retrograde Mercury confusion. Neptune will badly blur already broken and jumbled lines of communication.

Stationary/direct Neptune will raise expectations, but retrograde Mercury, befogged by stationary Neptune, will frustrate those same expectations.

But it’s worse than that.

Lights Out

3. 11/13 - There is a total eclipse of the Sun.

A solar eclipse always brings sudden and unexpected events. Karma comes due. Crises break. Lives change. On the upside, people escape limitations, self-imposed and otherwise. Long overdue changes occur, suddenly and very often unexpectedly.

It is always important to remember that the worst effects of an eclipse seem to occur on the macro-level.  Individual’s seem to benefit from the changes wrought by eclipses.

A Time for Long, Slow, Careful Decision-Making

4. 11/14 - Newly retrograde Mercury squares newly direct Neptune.

As both Mercury and Neptune emerge from their respective stations they square with each other, seriously compounding the confusion caused by their stations.

It’s unlikely that anyone will completely escape the ‘informational turbulence.’  It will be hard to think and communicate clearly about our emerging hopes or to make plans.

The total solar eclipse on 11/13 will occur amidst these bewildering Mercury and Neptune vibes.

Picking a Path in a Pea Soup Fog

The confusion caused by Mercury and Neptune will compound any potentially upsetting effects of the eclipse, and vice-versa.

Eclipses often force us to make difficult, irreversible decisions that we aren’t prepared to make, when they don’t just make the decision for us. This time around, we could be forced to respond to difficult events, and/or make fateful decisions, in very confusing circumstances.

The confusion will also make it hard to capitalize immediately or straightforwardly on the opportunities that the eclipse brings.

Then the planetary bombardment stops for roughly a week. And then the vibes become explosive.

Good-Bye Status Quo and/or Blind-Sided by Events

Now come four powerful astrological events that, realistically, must be thought of as one big, potentially very destructive event: Mars square Uranus (11/23), Mercury stationary/direct (11/26), Mars conjunct Pluto (11/27), and a partial lunar eclipse (11/28).

5. 11/23 - Mars squares Uranus.

The Mars/Uranus square will trigger uncontrolled, angry, potentially violent assertions of independence and resistance to authority.

In settled parts of the world we are likely to see public willfulness and bursts of temper. More incidents of freakish violence would not surprise me at all. In the US, we might see another in the rising tide of mass killings. In more troubled areas of the world, there is a likelihood of riots, civil unrest and outbreaks of warlike violence.

Lost in the Sound and Fury

6. 11/26 - Mercury stationary/direct.

Normally when Mercury turns direct, order and clarity return, events resume their normal pace. And there will doubtless be some of that. But Mercury makes its station two days after the Mars/Uranus square, one day before the Mars/Pluto conjunction and two days before a partial lunar eclipse. Please take that into account when making plans. That goes double for people in the US, which will be celebrating Thanksgiving around this time.

Confrontations, Most Likely

7. 11/27 - Mars conjoins Pluto.

Mars/Pluto conjunctions often express as bursts of temper and outbreaks of violence. Or, simply, the violent imposition of will upon others.

Combined with the Mars square Uranus vibes, I think it makes violence much more likely during this period. We might also see heated confrontations on the interpersonal level. People will come to the end of their patience. Tempers will be very much in evidence.

8. 11/28 - Partial Eclipse of the Moon.

This month-long marathon of difficult aspects comes to a close with a partial lunar eclipse on November 28th.

Sudden, unexpected events or outright crises will overturn outdated, self-limiting attitudes and release deep fears and anxieties.

At best, this tight grouping of astrological events will express as a surge of commitment to new ideas and demonstrations for reform. At worst, it will express as violent conflict or, on an individual level, heated, possibly violent interpersonal confrontations.

Eclipses often force us to make decisions, or confront dramatically changed circumstances - circumstances suddenly changed for better or worse. The first, solar eclipse (11/13) brings change amidst confusion. The second, lunar eclipse (11/28) brings change amidst highly charged, potentially violent circumstances.

So, November looks, in part, like radical changes amidst extreme confusion, a pause, then radical changes amidst hectic circumstances, high energy, little patience and short tempers. All told, rapid changes amidst confusion, impatience and anger.

The Chart Itself

Now let’s look at these aspects in context.

Where do they strike the November composite chart?

Precisely where they can shake the deepest foundations of all our most important relationships.

Just about every reason, every motive people have for relating to each other will be affected. Interpersonal behavior will change across the board. There is not likely to be anything subtle about it.

Relationship Armageddon

Mercury’s back and forth movement and the total Solar eclipse all take place in Scorpio on the cusp of the 5th and 6th houses.

Th 5th and 6th houses govern friendships and romantic and work relationships.  Scorpio governs all 8th house matters: reproductive sexuality, long-term, large scale financial concerns - pensions, insurance, social welfare programs - the distribution and redistribution of wealth and power within a nation and between generations.

This foretells deep, sweeping changes in romantic, intimate, reproductive, work and financial aspects of our lives, at all levels, inwardly and outwardly. The long and short-term expectations of friends, lovers, work associates and familiar members shift across a broad spectrum.

The motives that shape our behavior in all these areas will shift. We will want different things in our relationships with others, or the same thing, but for different reasons.

These energies will deeply and substantially affect all your social relations from those with people you hang out with to those with whom you work and everyone in between. Expect things to change profoundly in relationships you might have thought were casual and uncomplicated.

This could cause an epidemic of second-guessing, as people try to understand what others want, and, probably not successfully, try to fit those new things into familiar, comprehensible, and old, terms.

The Mars/Pluto activity takes place in Capricorn in the 7nth house of key relationships, near the descendant and not too far from Juno in the 6th house, the house of interdependency.

These explosive, potentially violent and disruptive energies affect our most important personal and professional relationships. With Juno involved, that will include long-term, formal bonds, i.e., marriage and domestic partnerships of all kinds.

Those involved in sound, healthy personal and work relationships might expect substantial but more or less mutually agreed upon changes. Those in shaky relationships might experience a sudden and complete break.

The Mars/Uranus square at about the same time adds a potentially disruptive drive for personal liberation to the mix. Whatever other sticking points there might be, partners will be demanding greater freedom of movement. Keep in mind: when Mars squares Uranus, the Uranian impulse can be awkward, rude or embarrassing

What Not to Do

The New Moon eclipse energy hits in Gemini in the 12th, near the South Node, Lilith, Jupiter, Vesta and Ceres.

This eclipse, striking near the South Node, warns us away from reliance on ideology, religious dogma, legal abstractions, ingrained attitudes and fixed ideas about nurturance issues.

Work out new agreements with real people in real situations in the real world. Be practical and tolerant of what friends, lovers and fellow workers need to live well. Be realistic, also, about what is possible under present circumstances.

Respect the desire of friends, workmates and others for personal freedom and self-expression. Above all, be prepared to change.

Two other placements, not previously discussed, help us get a feel for November’s chart in general and its effects on relationships in particular.

Planetary Overtones

Neptune and Chiron are in Pisces on the Midheaven.

People are seeking looser more flexible bonds that will allow them greater freedom of movement and space to process and heal.

Venus in Libra is close to Saturn in Scorpio in the 5th.

Relationships are passing through a Platonic, or celibate, phase.  People want relief from the burdens and complexities of physical relationships to work out emotional and spiritual issues and to make changes.

Bad News Summary

November opens with a barrage of confusion, some of it profound.  It closes with a high energy burst of impatience, determination and temper. The combination could be overwhelming on many levels.

The planets demand that we seek clarity, commitment and determination with respect to our goals.

We need to be sure our plans for the future are not dictated by outdated or unfair attitudes or by simple ignorance of the facts.

Expect moments of truth and major turning points. Eclipses often bring personal situations to a head - in finances, at work, among family, in relationships, in health matters.

For better or worse, the easy way or the hard way, eclipses can change the course of our lives. On the upside, a great many those changes will be welcome, long overdue and relatively painless.

The Good News

As we all know by now, three major, and highly disruptive, planetary ingresses occurred between January 2008 and February 2011. Pluto entered Capricorn, Uranus entered Aries and Neptune entered Pisces. Each of these placements is, in its way, unusually powerful and important.

After the initial and substantial shock of theses ingresses, the outer planets established a powerfully transformational but highly destabilizing planetary relationships. The immense energies of these outer planets were also subject to gross abuse.

Our lives entered a calmer state, but one still marked by deep turmoil. The damage had subsided but we could not heal, beyond a certain point. Events lacked clear direction. There was no consensus among leaders. Stalemate, stagnation and unhelpful confrontation was the order of the day.

Order and Direction Supplant the Simmering Chaos and Stagnation

On October 5th, Saturn joined the North Node in Scorpio.

Sober, rational Saturn took over rulership of the new planetary arrangement, establishing helpful relationships with the three outer planets. The North Node contributed a sense of direction.

Harnessing the Power

The results will be gradually increasing stability and direction in the world. People are becoming more amenable to reason and common sense. We are all better able to plan for the future and more successfully guide events in our lives.

Saturn’s entrance into Scorpio established a network of positive relationships with the three outer planets, making their powerful but unruly energies easier to work with.

  • Saturn is now in sextile relationship and mutual reception with Pluto. Those in power are more likely listen to reason, now. A proper balance of economic and political power will gradually be restored among nations and between people.
  • Saturn is in trine relationship with Neptune. Ideals are more likely to be rational and harmonize more readily with reality.
  • Saturn in Scorpio rules Uranus in Aries. Reformers are more likely to be reasonable and realistic in their demands. Uranus is exalted in Scorpio. Saturn’s placement there will further enhance relations between reformers and established powers.
  • Saturn, Pluto, Neptune and Uranus are all in positive relationship. This will take the edge off the Uranus/Pluto square. It will lessen the possibility of confrontation and favor compromise and mutual accommodation generally.
  • The North Node is likewise in generally favorable relationship with the outer planets. Events and circumstances will naturally push people in the direction of proper, North Node solutions, i.e., shared solutions for shared problems.

The Real Deal

So, saying that we should release built-up negativity isn’t just invoking general psychological and spiritual principles. The planets are demanding that we do so and promising us rich rewards if we concede.

  • We can look forward to the end of stalemate, indecision and drift. And an end to frustrating, unproductive confrontations with authority. Unless we cling to the dark and decidedly dangerous emotions generated in the last few years.
  • We can also expect a lessening of irrational, freakish, violent behavior. However, these energies are extremely difficult on the human mind and nervous system.  People with mental and emotional challenges and/or poor life management skills will probably continue to go over the edge. Despite improving conditions, we can expect a continuing increase in the number of those experiencing mental and emotional difficulties.
  • We can also look forward to a dramatic decrease in the influence of demagogues and their fanatical, extremist followers.
  • We can shed fears related to the hazards of the previous astrological phase.  These fears are now officially out of date. Don’t let them interfere as you meet the challenges of November.
We need, for example, to abandon disaster consciousness, which encompasses, among other things, the notion that the world economy is on the verge of complete collapse.

We need to realize that this is a new day and start living in it.

A Footnote about Super Storm Sandy

The weather is affected by the planets. Anyone who has kept track will attest to this.

If I had had to guess, I would have said a storm like Sandy would have happened in November. It is an apt expression of November’s astrology. And it is common for one month’s energies to manifest toward the end of the previous month. Also, Solar Arc Chiron is transiting the US first house, making the US prone to more frequent and serious natural and man-made disasters.

I don’t doubt that some of that went on with Sandy.

But there were also several Solar Arc contacts at the time of the storm that might account for it.

At the time of the storm:

  • Solar Arc Sun was contacting US natal Uranus. Exact.
  • Solar Arc Saturn was contacting US natal Uranus. Just separating.
  • Solar Arc Mars and Pluto were contacting US natal Neptune. Exact.
  • Solar Arc Quoaor was contacting US natal Chiron. Just separating.

I think these Solar Arc contacts specific to the US chart are sufficient to account for the occurrence of Sandy. All of them would have been very much in effect at the time of the storm.

More work would have to be done to explain why Sandy struck so hard at New Jersey and New York. In the chart for October 30th, cast for Newark, NJ at the time of Sandy's landfall, Mars and Pluto were bracketing the descendant.  That would not bode well.

Beyond that, and without a great deal more work, I think we get into the realm of speculation and risk trivializing a very tragic event.
